Santa Fe voted overwhelmingly for a new tax on homes sold for more than $1 million. The new 3% tax will fund affordable housing construction and maintenance. The vote indicates strong support for so-called "mansion taxes" across the country. Several other major cities and states have proposed or recently passed mansion taxes, or some other tax increase to fund affordable housing. Seattle voted on Tuesday to triple its property tax that funds affordable housing and aids low-income tenants.

Hundreds of migrants, from babies to the elderly, live inside a shuttle bus center at O’Hare International Airport’s Terminal 1. As more migrants arrived, the city's existing services were strained. Chicago began using the city's two international airports as temporary shelters as the number of migrants arriving by plane increased. At O'Hare, migrants have spread out beyond the curtain for more space, sleeping along windows. At Boston's Logan International Airport, migrants who arrive overnight are given cots for a few hours before being sent elsewhere.

They raced away from the wildfire tearing through the town of Lahaina last week with just what they could carry, then survived anywhere they could on Maui: in their cars, on friends’ couches, in shelters or in tents by the side of the road. The hotel rooms are covered by state and federal temporary housing programs at no cost to the survivors. The American Red Cross, which is running the mostly FEMA-funded hotel program, said it has secured 750 rooms where survivors can live for as long as they need. The shelters, which housed more than 2,000 people the day after the fires broke out, now hold a few hundred people a day. “We will be able to keep folks in hotels for as long as it takes to find housing solutions.”

Arlington, Virginia, is finally set to pass a "missing middle" housing policy after years of debate. Arlington is just the latest community to address missing middle housing as a part of a broader national reckoning. Across the country, critics of increasing housing density in single family neighborhoods are disproportionately older, wealthier, white homeowners. Advocates of missing middle housing say there's a deep generational gap when it comes to housing density. Despite the massive effort it took to come to the verge of passing missing middle housing, Arlington officials predict change will be slow and limited.
Too many vacation rentals and strict homeowners associations are pushing up housing costs, a study said. According to Johnson, there are too many vacation rentals in the Sunshine State. It's this particular combination of strict HOA rules and the sheer number of vacation rentals is a mixture that is affecting housing affordability negatively, he said. According to Johnson's study, Florida is now home to 9 of the 21 most overpriced rental markets in the US. The number of vacation rentals in the state is only making it harder for people to find affordable places to rent, the study suggests.
